Most likely will spend today grocery shopping and washing clothes. Fun.
We watched 2 movies last night, one great, one not so great:
- We started off with the 7 Faces of Dr. Lao (1964) starring Tony Randall and Barbara Eden. Reminiscent of the later film Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983) (based on the Ray Bradbury tale), but gentler and kinder. Randall plays seven characters (and one brief 8th one, see if you can find him!) and I was amazed at not only the makeup artists' skills, but his own far-reaching acting ones. Having grown up on "The Odd Couple" and watching his various appearances on other 1970s/80s shows, I had no idea he was that good of an actor. Seeing a young brunette Barbara Eden doing something a bit more serious than sitcom comedy was a treat as well. The storyline in a nutshell is that Dr. Lao is the catalyst that allows the characters to look into their own heart and see what is really there. It's not too deep or flashy, but it gets the point across and is a lot of fun.
- After that, we put Petunia to bed and watched "Masters of Horror" The Black Cat (2007). First off, let me state that I am a huge E.A. Poe fan and have read his short story, The Black Cat, so I am familiar with this tale and knew what to expect. What I did NOT expect was the graphic level of violence to animals shown on the film. It could have been alluded to without displaying it, in fact in my opinion a good director could have, quite successfully (think Hitchcock). I had forgotten that most directors today would rather go for visual violence, obviously to cover up their lack of imagination. From the other reviews I have read, I am obviously in the minority with my opinion. I did enjoy Jeffrey Combs' portrayal of Poe though.
