Linda Sienkiewicz defines Altered Books: "An altered book is any book, old or new, that has been recycled by creative means into a work of art. One of the earliest forms of altering books was called palimpsest. During the medieval period, it was common to reuse vellum and parchment for economic reasons by either rubbing out, scraping off or otherwise covering up the original text. It's inexpensive, makes use of recycled materials, and magically combines the written word with art. What could be better?"
